Far from home, but not alone

Settling into a new country. Visa and residency decisions. Family expectations from back home. Raising children between two cultures. A relationship without the family support you grew up with. Long distances — from family, and sometimes from people who truly understand you.

Mantraminds offers a calm, confidential space to talk it through with someone who understands — without having to explain your culture first.

Supporting Indian families across New Zealand

New Zealand's Indian community is one of its fastest-growing. It is centred in Auckland, including Sandringham, Papatoetoe and Mount Roskill, with communities in Wellington, Hamilton and Christchurch. It includes long-established Gujarati and Punjabi families, many Fiji Indian families and recent arrivals.

What people in New Zealand often talk to us about:

  • work visas and the path to residency;
  • long hours running a family business or working shifts;
  • international students managing study, work and money;
  • isolation in smaller towns, far from family and community;
  • raising children between cultures.

Times that can feel heavier: Diwali and family occasions spent apart, and the December holidays when India feels especially far away.

  • No psychiatric consultations or medication
  • No sessions for under-18s (we support parents instead)
  • No crisis or emergency care

If our team feels you'd benefit from clinical care, we'll tell you honestly and help you find local services.

Important information

About our counsellors. Mantraminds is based in India, and we hope to support people wherever they live. Our Well-being Counsellors are qualified and experienced in India, and some hold Indian registrations. Overseas qualifications and registrations do not give anyone registration to practise in New Zealand. Our counsellors are not registered with the New Zealand Psychologists Board, the Psychotherapists Board of Aotearoa New Zealand or the Medical Council of New Zealand. When they work with clients in New Zealand, they act only as Well-being Counsellors, not as psychologists, psychotherapists, psychiatrists or medical practitioners.

What this service doesn't provide. Our service is not a New Zealand psychology, psychiatry or medical service. It doesn't provide:

  • medical, psychiatric or psychological diagnosis, or diagnostic assessment;
  • treatment of any mental health condition;
  • prescribing, or advice on starting, stopping or changing medication;
  • medical certificates, reports, letters or certificates for legal, insurance, employment, immigration or court purposes;
  • emergency or crisis care.

When to seek care in New Zealand. If you have a diagnosed or suspected mental health condition, symptoms that are significant or getting worse, need medication or medical advice, or are already receiving mental health treatment, please seek or continue care with your GP or a New Zealand-registered health professional. If your counsellor thinks you need clinical care, they will tell you and suggest local services.

Claims and reimbursement. Sessions can't be claimed through ACC, Te Whatu Ora funding, private health insurance or employer schemes, and may not qualify for workplace, employer or EAP reimbursement. Please check with your employer before booking.

Your choice. Registered local services are available to you. By booking, you confirm you've chosen an India-based, non-clinical service instead, knowing the points above. Because our counsellors aren't registered locally, these boards can't take complaints about them. Please bring any concern to us at contact@mantraminds.com.

In an emergency, call 111 or go to your nearest hospital emergency department. You can also contact 1737: call or text.

This doesn't affect your rights under New Zealand consumer law.

What time are sessions in New Zealand?

Sessions run during India daytime hours, within each counsellor's own availability. For example, a 10:00 AM India-time session is at 4:30 PM in Auckland in July and 5:30 PM in January, as clocks change. Your booking page shows every time in your local time. We're not a 24/7 service.

Where can I get free mental health support in New Zealand?

Is this therapy?

Are your counsellors registered psychologists or psychotherapists in New Zealand?

No. Our counsellors are postgraduate-qualified in India and provide a non-clinical well-being service. They are not registered with the New Zealand Psychologists Board or the Psychotherapists Board of Aotearoa New Zealand, and don't use those titles.

Not at all. Our counsellors bring particular understanding of South Asian family life, but everyone is welcome.

In India. Sessions take place online by secure video during India daytime hours, shown in your local time. We're not a 24/7 service.

How will you contact me?

By email, which is our preferred way to communicate, or through the chat on this website. We also ask for your WhatsApp number when you sign up, and use it only if we need to reach you urgently, for example about your safety or a session that can't go ahead.

Can I book a session for today?

Usually not. Please book at least one day ahead (India time). Same-day sessions are offered only in exceptional cases, if a counsellor happens to be free. If you need support today, see the free services on our local support page. You pay when you book.

Do I have to commit to a set number of sessions?

No. You pay for one session at a time and can stop whenever you like.

What if I join late?

Your session still ends at its scheduled time. If you haven't joined within 15 minutes, it counts as a no-show and isn't refunded. If your counsellor is late, we'll make up the time or give you session credit.

How will the payment appear on my statement?

As MANTRAMINDS. You pay when you book. If you cancel in time, we refund the full amount to your card (your bank decides how quickly it shows). If anything looks wrong, email care@mantraminds.com and we'll sort it out.

Is my information safe?
