Getting mental health care
Start with your GP
Your GP (family doctor) is usually the best first step. They can talk through how you've been feeling, discuss options, and refer you to NHS mental health services if that's right for you. If you're not registered with a GP, you can register with a local practice — you don't need to be a British citizen to do so.
NHS Talking Therapies (England)
If you live in England and you're 18 or over (16 or 17 in some areas), you can refer yourself to NHS Talking Therapies for anxiety and depression — you don't need to see your GP first. Search "Find an NHS Talking Therapies service" on nhs.uk and enter your GP surgery's name.
Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
Speak to your GP, who can refer you to local psychological and mental health services. In Scotland, Breathing Space (0800 83 85 87) is a free, confidential listening line for anyone over 16 (Monday–Thursday 6pm–2am, Friday 6pm–midnight, weekends 2pm–midnight).
