Life in Trinidad and Tobago

Life in Trinidad and Tobago can mean long commutes and traffic, careers shaped by a few big industries, and the pull to study or work abroad. Many families keep close ties across generations, with strong expectations around marriage, faith, work and looking after parents, alongside the need to make your own choices. Finding a calm, private space to think things through, away from people who all seem to know each other, isn't always easy.

Mantraminds offers a calm, confidential space to talk it through with someone who understands, without having to explain your culture first.

Supporting Indo-Trinidadian families

Indo-Trinidadians, descendants of indentured labourers who arrived from India from 1845, are one of the largest communities in Trinidad and Tobago. Divali and Indian Arrival Day (30 May) are national holidays.

What people in Trinidad and Tobago often talk to us about:

  • changing expectations between generations;
  • identity in mixed-heritage families;
  • relatives who have moved to the US, Canada or the UK;
  • work and career pressure, and the cost of living;
  • marriage and family responsibilities.

Times that can feel heavier: busy festival and holiday seasons such as Divali, Phagwah, Christmas and Carnival, when family expectations peak.

What our service is — and isn't

Mantraminds offers well-being counselling for adults (18+): support with life's everyday challenges. To keep you safe, we're clear about what we don't offer in Trinidad and Tobago:

  • No diagnosis or treatment of mental health conditions
  • No psychiatric consultations or medication
  • No sessions for under-18s (we support parents instead)
  • No crisis or emergency care

If our team feels you'd benefit from clinical care, we'll tell you honestly and help you find local services.

Important information

About our counsellors. Mantraminds is based in India, and we hope to support people wherever they live. Our Well-being Counsellors are qualified and experienced in India, and some hold Indian registrations. Overseas qualifications and registrations do not give anyone registration to practise in Trinidad and Tobago. Our counsellors are not registered with any professional regulator in Trinidad and Tobago (Trinidad and Tobago has no statutory register for counsellors). When they work with clients in Trinidad and Tobago, they act only as Well-being Counsellors, not as psychologists, psychotherapists, psychiatrists or medical practitioners.

What this service doesn't provide. Our service is not a psychology, psychiatry or medical service in Trinidad and Tobago. It doesn't provide:

  • medical, psychiatric or psychological diagnosis, or diagnostic assessment;
  • treatment of any mental health condition;
  • prescribing, or advice on starting, stopping or changing medication;
  • medical certificates, reports, letters or certificates for legal, insurance, employment, immigration or court purposes;
  • emergency or crisis care.

When to seek care in Trinidad and Tobago. If you have a diagnosed or suspected mental health condition, symptoms that are significant or getting worse, need medication or medical advice, or are already receiving mental health treatment, please seek or continue care with a doctor, your local health centre, or the community mental health services of your Regional Health Authority. If your counsellor thinks you need clinical care, they will tell you and suggest local services.

Claims and reimbursement. Sessions can't be claimed through the public health system (Regional Health Authorities), private health insurance or employer assistance programmes, and may not qualify for workplace or employer reimbursement. Please check with your employer before booking.

Your choice. Local services are available to you. By booking, you confirm you've chosen an India-based, non-clinical service instead, knowing the points above. Because our counsellors aren't registered locally, local regulators can't take complaints about them. Please bring any concern to us at contact@mantraminds.com.

In an emergency, call 999 or go to the Accident and Emergency department of your nearest hospital. You can also contact Lifeline Trinidad and Tobago: Call 800-5588 or 866-5433 (toll-free, bmobile and Digicel) · 220-3636 (FLOW to FLOW).
