Life in Suriname
Life in Suriname often means moving between Dutch, Sranan Tongo, Sarnami and English in a single day, and between close family expectations and your own plans for study, work, marriage and home. Rising costs, a small job market and family members living in the Netherlands can all add pressure. Finding a calm, private space to think things through isn't always easy.
Mantraminds offers a calm, confidential space to talk it through with someone who understands, without having to explain your culture first.
Supporting Hindustani families in Suriname
Hindustani Surinamers, descendants of indentured labourers who arrived from India from 1873, are Suriname's largest ethnic group, and Sarnami is spoken in many homes. Many families have close relatives in the Netherlands. Many Sarnami speakers find it easy to talk with our Hindi-speaking counsellors, and you're welcome to mix languages.
What people in Suriname often talk to us about:
- family split between Suriname and the Netherlands;
- changing expectations between generations;
- the cost of living and economic uncertainty;
- marriage and family responsibilities;
- caring for children and elders at the same time.
Times that can feel heavier: Phagwa, Divali and Indian Arrival Day (5 June), when family gatherings bring both joy and pressure.

What our service is — and isn't
Mantraminds offers well-being counselling for adults (18+): support with life's everyday challenges. To keep you safe, we're clear about what we don't offer in Suriname:
- No diagnosis or treatment of mental health conditions
- No psychiatric consultations or medication
- No sessions for under-18s (we support parents instead)
- No crisis or emergency care
If our team feels you'd benefit from clinical care, we'll tell you honestly and help you find local services.
Need urgent help?
If you're in crisis or feel unsafe, please don't wait for a session:
- Emergency: call 115
- Crisishulplijn 114 (national mental health crisis line, Ministry of Health, Welfare and Labour with the Psychiatrisch Centrum Suriname): Call 114 (free, confidential) · 24/7
Important information
About our counsellors. Mantraminds is based in India, and we hope to support people wherever they live. Our Well-being Counsellors are qualified and experienced in India, and some hold Indian registrations. Overseas qualifications and registrations do not give anyone registration to practise in Suriname. Our counsellors are not registered with any professional regulator in Suriname (Suriname has no statutory register for counsellors). When they work with clients in Suriname, they act only as Well-being Counsellors, not as psychologists, psychotherapists, psychiatrists or medical practitioners.
What this service doesn't provide. Our service is not a Surinamese psychology, psychiatry or medical service. It doesn't provide:
- medical, psychiatric or psychological diagnosis, or diagnostic assessment;
- treatment of any mental health condition;
- prescribing, or advice on starting, stopping or changing medication;
- medical certificates, reports, letters or certificates for legal, insurance, employment, immigration or court purposes;
- emergency or crisis care.
When to seek care in Suriname. If you have a diagnosed or suspected mental health condition, symptoms that are significant or getting worse, need medication or medical advice, or are already receiving mental health treatment, please seek or continue care with your huisarts (family doctor), a Regionale Gezondheidsdienst (RGD) clinic, or the Psychiatrisch Centrum Suriname (PCS). If your counsellor thinks you need clinical care, they will tell you and suggest local services.
Claims and reimbursement. Sessions can't be claimed through the Staatsziekenfonds (SZF), the national basic health insurance (basiszorgverzekering), private health insurance or employer schemes, and may not qualify for workplace or employer reimbursement. Please check with your employer before booking.
Your choice. Local services are available to you. By booking, you confirm you've chosen an India-based, non-clinical service instead, knowing the points above. Because our counsellors aren't registered locally, local regulators can't take complaints about them. Please bring any concern to us at contact@mantraminds.com.
In an emergency, call 115 or go to the Spoedeisende Hulp (emergency department) of your nearest hospital. You can also contact Crisishulplijn 114 (national mental health crisis line, Ministry of Health, Welfare and Labour with the Psychiatrisch Centrum Suriname): call 114 (free, confidential).
This doesn't affect your rights under Suriname's Civil Code (Burgerlijk Wetboek).
