Life in Sri Lanka

Competitive exams and the pressure to secure a good job. Rising living costs, and family or relatives working overseas. Expectations around marriage, caring for parents and keeping everyone happy, often all at once.

Mantraminds offers a calm, confidential space to talk it through with someone who understands, without having to explain your culture first.

How we support people in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka and India share close cultural, religious and family ties. Many people who contact us from Sri Lanka want to talk to someone outside their own social circle: confidentially, by video, and without worrying about being recognised.

What people in Sri Lanka often talk to us about:

  • exam and career pressure, from A/Levels to university entrance and job searches;
  • the rising cost of living and financial uncertainty;
  • family members working overseas, and the gaps they leave at home;
  • marriage and family expectations;
  • caring for children and elders at the same time.

Times that can feel heavier: exam seasons, and festival periods such as Avurudu and Deepavali when family expectations run high.

Our local support page lists free services in your area.

What our service is — and isn't

Mantraminds offers well-being counselling for adults (18+): support with life's everyday challenges. To keep you safe, we're clear about what we don't offer in Sri Lanka:

  • No diagnosis or treatment of mental health conditions
  • No psychiatric consultations or medication
  • No sessions for under-18s (we support parents instead)
  • No crisis or emergency care

If our team feels you'd benefit from clinical care, we'll tell you honestly and help you find local services.

Need urgent help?

If you're in crisis or feel unsafe, please don't wait for a session:

  • Emergency: call 119 (police) or 1990 (Suwa Seriya ambulance)

Important information

About our counsellors. Mantraminds is based in India, and we hope to support people wherever they live. Our Well-being Counsellors are qualified and experienced in India, and some hold Indian registrations. Overseas qualifications and registrations do not give anyone registration to practise in Sri Lanka. Our counsellors are not registered with the Sri Lanka Medical Council (which registers doctors and some allied health professions, including clinical psychologists). When they work with clients in Sri Lanka, they act only as Well-being Counsellors, not as psychologists, psychotherapists, psychiatrists or medical practitioners.

What this service doesn't provide. Our service is not a Sri Lankan psychology, psychiatry or medical service. It doesn't provide:

  • medical, psychiatric or psychological diagnosis, or diagnostic assessment;
  • treatment of any mental health condition;
  • prescribing, or advice on starting, stopping or changing medication;
  • medical certificates, reports, letters or certificates for legal, insurance, employment, immigration or court purposes;
  • emergency or crisis care.

When to seek care in Sri Lanka. If you have a diagnosed or suspected mental health condition, symptoms that are significant or getting worse, need medication or medical advice, or are already receiving mental health treatment, please seek or continue care with a doctor, or the psychiatry clinic at your nearest government hospital. If your counsellor thinks you need clinical care, they will tell you and suggest local services.

Claims and reimbursement. Sessions can't be claimed through government hospitals, private health insurance, or employer medical schemes, and may not qualify for workplace or employer reimbursement. Please check with your employer before booking.

Your choice. Local services are available to you. By booking, you confirm you've chosen an India-based, non-clinical service instead, knowing the points above. Because our counsellors aren't registered locally, local regulators can't take complaints about them. Please bring any concern to us at contact@mantraminds.com.

In an emergency, call 119 (police) or 1990 (Suwa Seriya ambulance) or go to the Accident and Emergency (A&E) unit or Emergency Treatment Unit (ETU) at your nearest hospital. You can also contact 1926 National Mental Health Helpline (National Institute of Mental Health): call 1926 · WhatsApp 075 555 1926.

This doesn't affect your rights under the Consumer Affairs Authority Act No. 9 of 2003.
