Life in Fiji
Long hours in business, the public service or tourism. Family expectations that span generations, and decisions about marriage, careers and caring for parents that involve everyone. Children, siblings or partners who have moved to Australia, New Zealand or Canada, and the quiet work of holding a family together across distances.
Mantraminds offers a calm, confidential space to talk it through with someone who understands, without having to explain your culture first.
Supporting Indo-Fijian families
Indo-Fijians, many descended from the girmitiyas who came from India as indentured labourers between 1879 and 1916, make up a large part of Fiji's population, and Fiji Hindi is spoken in many homes. Many Fiji Hindi speakers find it easy to talk with our Hindi-speaking counsellors, and you're welcome to mix English and Hindi.
What people in Fiji often talk to us about:
- children and relatives moving to Australia, New Zealand or Canada, and the people left behind;
- caring for elderly parents as families spread out;
- balancing tradition and modern life between generations;
- work, money and career pressure;
- marriage and family expectations.
Times that can feel heavier: Diwali and Holi, when absent family members are missed most.

Important information
About our counsellors. Mantraminds is based in India, and we hope to support people wherever they live. Our Well-being Counsellors are qualified and experienced in India, and some hold Indian registrations. Overseas qualifications and registrations do not give anyone registration to practise in Fiji. Our counsellors are not registered with any Fijian professional regulator (Fiji has no registration scheme for counsellors or psychologists). When they work with clients in Fiji, they act only as Well-being Counsellors, not as psychologists, psychotherapists, psychiatrists or medical practitioners.
What this service doesn't provide. Our service is not a Fijian psychology, psychiatry or medical service. It doesn't provide:
- medical, psychiatric or psychological diagnosis, or diagnostic assessment;
- treatment of any mental health condition;
- prescribing, or advice on starting, stopping or changing medication;
- medical certificates, reports, letters or certificates for legal, insurance, employment, immigration or court purposes;
- emergency or crisis care.
When to seek care in Fiji. If you have a diagnosed or suspected mental health condition, symptoms that are significant or getting worse, need medication or medical advice, or are already receiving mental health treatment, please seek or continue care with a doctor at your local health centre or hospital, or the mental health services at St Giles Hospital in Suva. If your counsellor thinks you need clinical care, they will tell you and suggest local services.
Claims and reimbursement. Sessions can't be claimed through Fiji's public health services, private health insurance, or employer medical or employee assistance schemes, and may not qualify for workplace or employer reimbursement. Please check with your employer before booking.
Your choice. Local services are available to you. By booking, you confirm you've chosen an India-based, non-clinical service instead, knowing the points above. Because our counsellors aren't registered locally, local regulators can't take complaints about them. Please bring any concern to us at contact@mantraminds.com.
In an emergency, call 911 or go to the emergency department of your nearest hospital. You can also contact Lifeline Fiji: Call 1543 (toll-free).
This doesn't affect your rights under the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission Act 2010.
