Life in Portugal
Building a life in Portugal can mean learning a new language while holding down long shifts or a demanding tech role, paperwork and permit renewals that take longer than anyone expects, and rents that keep climbing in Lisbon and Porto. Family is often a long flight and several time zones away, while friendships and community take time to grow. It can feel lonely, even when everything looks settled from the outside.
Mantraminds offers a calm, confidential space to talk it through with someone who understands, without having to explain your culture first.
Supporting Indian families across Portugal
Portugal's Indian community is diverse. It includes families with Goan roots who have lived in Portugal for generations, newer arrivals working in technology, hospitality and retail in Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve, and people working on farms in the Alentejo.
What people in Portugal often talk to us about:
- residence permit processes and long waits for appointments;
- bringing family over, or being apart from them while you wait;
- learning Portuguese while working long shifts or a demanding job;
- housing costs, especially in Lisbon and Porto;
- keeping family traditions alive while children grow up Portuguese.
Times that can feel heavier: festivals and family occasions you can't travel home for.

What our service is — and isn't
Mantraminds offers well-being counselling for adults (18+): support with life's everyday challenges. To keep you safe, we're clear about what we don't offer in Portugal:
- No diagnosis or treatment of mental health conditions
- No psychiatric consultations or medication
- No sessions for under-18s (we support parents instead)
- No crisis or emergency care
If our team feels you'd benefit from clinical care, we'll tell you honestly and help you find local services.
Need urgent help?
If you're in crisis or feel unsafe, please don't wait for a session:
- Emergency: call 112
- SNS 24 psychological counselling line (staffed by psychologists): Call 808 24 24 24 and ask for psychological counselling (24/7)
- SOS Voz Amiga (emotional support): Call 213 544 545 · 912 802 669 · 963 524 660 · 930 712 500 (Daily 3.30pm–12.30am)
Important information
About our counsellors. Mantraminds is based in India, and we hope to support people wherever they live. Our Well-being Counsellors are qualified and experienced in India, and some hold Indian registrations. Overseas qualifications and registrations do not give anyone registration to practise in Portugal. Our counsellors are not registered with the Ordem dos Psicólogos Portugueses (OPP), Portugal's professional body for psychologists. When they work with clients in Portugal, they act only as Well-being Counsellors, not as psychologists, psychotherapists, psychiatrists or medical practitioners.
Not psychological intervention. Our conversations are well-being counselling for everyday life challenges. They are not psychological intervention, assessment or psychotherapy, which in Portugal are provided by members of the Ordem dos Psicólogos Portugueses.
What this service doesn't provide. Our service is not a Portuguese psychology, psychiatry or medical service. It doesn't provide:
- medical, psychiatric or psychological diagnosis, or diagnostic assessment;
- treatment of any mental health condition;
- prescribing, or advice on starting, stopping or changing medication;
- medical certificates, reports, letters or certificates for legal, insurance, employment, immigration or court purposes;
- emergency or crisis care.
When to seek care in Portugal. If you have a diagnosed or suspected mental health condition, symptoms that are significant or getting worse, need medication or medical advice, or are already receiving mental health treatment, please seek or continue care with your médico de família at your local centro de saúde, or SNS 24 on 808 24 24 24. If your counsellor thinks you need clinical care, they will tell you and suggest local services.
Claims and reimbursement. Sessions can't be claimed through the SNS (Serviço Nacional de Saúde), ADSE, private health insurance (seguro de saúde) or employer schemes, and may not qualify for workplace or employer reimbursement. Please check with your employer before booking.
Your choice. Local services are available to you. By booking, you confirm you've chosen an India-based, non-clinical service instead, knowing the points above. Because our counsellors aren't registered locally, local regulators can't take complaints about them. Please bring any concern to us at contact@mantraminds.com.
In an emergency, call 112 or go to the urgência (emergency department) of your nearest hospital. You can also contact SNS 24 psychological counselling line (staffed by psychologists): call 808 24 24 24 and ask for psychological counselling.
This doesn't affect your rights under the Decreto-Lei n.º 24/2014 (distance contracts), including your right to cancel within 14 days (see our Cancellation & Refund Policy ).
